the morning after the big party
the only girl i’ve ever loved and i
woke up in separate rooms
i went to say hello and she clutched her forehead
“i’m so hungover” duh
“don’t fret, my pet,” i said, 3/28th jokingly
“i’ll make us some breakfast”
i got to work buttering the toast
pulled it with singed fingers from the toaster
and promptly dropped a piece on the floor.
after quick deliberation,
i decided there’s no way i’d give her the floor piece.
and i brought the good one to her, smiling
“it’s good toast,” she said.
audible munches
and i thought, as i sat on the bedside
what a silly way to show myself i love someone
as i ate the floor slice.
